Here's how to get started waymarking or geocaching with iWaylogger!

Fast Start:

Best performed outside with a clear view of the sky, near a recognizable landmark. Feel free to switch between this tutorial and the "Waylogging" view:

1) Touch the "New File" button.

2) Enter the name of a file in the top text box. Call it "test," or use your first name. Just a few letters will do.

3) Touch the "Dismiss" button.

4) Touch the "Create File" button.

5) In the file directory table, touch the name of the file you just created.

6) The averaging GPS screen will now appear. Wait for accuracy better than 20m. This will be no problem if you have a reasonable view of the sky.

7) Wait for the numbers in the lat/lng display to start, and then stop changing.

8) If you have a couple of spare minutes, wait for the lat/lng numbers to go through a second, third, or fourth change cycle. This will improve accuracy.

9) Touch the "Stop" button.

10) Touch the bottom, center of the text box.

11) Add some comments, then touch "Store."

12) Look at the red pin on the map display. Switch to "Hybrid" view, and zoom in on your position. How close is the pin to your actual position? (Should be within a few meters)

13) Touch the pin to read its annotation.

14) Touch the locate button (upper-left hand corner), and wait a few seconds.

15) You should see a blue dot representing your (non-averaged) real-time position.

16) Try panning and zooming the map. It should revert to its original settings after a few seconds.

17) Turn off auto-zoom. Now it should be possible to pan and zoom as desired.

18) Hit the "Files" button to return to the files directory.

These are the basics. As you advance, you may want to enter coordinates off a data sheet in the "New File" view. Just be careful to use the right format. Turn the decimal degrees switch on to enter values in decimal degrees. Also, a coordinate in the southern or western hemisphere must start with a negative(-) sign.

For example, to enter N 33°17'02.55", W 97°41'37.02"

enter 33.170255 / -97.413702 in the appropriate boxes with the decimal degrees switch turned OFF.

If you want to upload a .gpx file from your iPhone to your computer, try to use the Mozilla Firefox® browser and save as "All Files," not xml. Otherwise, to delete the .xml suffix on your computer, select the file's icon, and hit Command-I (Macintosh), or right-click / Properties (Windows®) to change the name. Note: For Windows®, you must have file extensions showing. If they are hidden, go to Windows Explorer, select "Tools" from the top menu bar, then "Folder Options," then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types."

Also, feel free to e-mail or MMS copies of your logs along with photos to your friends. Just touch a ".txt" filename in the directory view as if you were going to edit one of your logs. Then, touch the "Copy" button. Once pressed, the button label will momentarily change to "Got it!" Quit iWaylogger, and insert the copied text into your iPhone's built-in e-mail or MMS program by double-tapping and touching "Paste."

Now, here are some things to watch out for:

- Do not let use of iWaylogger distract you from paying attention to your surroundings.

- Do not use iWaylogger as a spare flash drive. We cannot guarantee any data stored using iWaylogger.

- Always be aware of privacy issues. iWaylogger records the date and time you were at a specific location. Do not reveal this information to another party if it could present a concern later on. Remember, your logs are fully editable by touching the ".txt" files in the directory view, and some or all of this information may be removed, if necessary. Also, if you are using a shared Wi-Fi network (such as in a hotel), keep in mind that any user with the right URL in their browser can see your iWaylogger files when iWaylogger is connected to the network.
